    In the case of screw jacks with trapezoidal thread spindles, only a small part of the drive power is converted into lifting force. There are losses in the worm drive and at the trapezoidal thread, which have to be dissipated in the form of heat. The efficiency of trapezoid thread spindles is far lower as compared to ball screw spindles because of the sliding friction. However, the trapezoidal screw is technically simpler and less expensive. Any securing, for example by a brake, should be examined individually, owing to the limited self-locking of trapezoidal screws.

    The screw jack is sealed and filled with a synthetic lubricant. In normal operation, the gearbox is lubricated for life. The trapezoid thread spindle must be inspected regularly and re-lubricated according to the operating cycle. In the case of long-life systems (for example, working platforms or theatre stages) the grease loses its lubrication properties after approx. 5 years. Dust and dirt enhance this effect. We recommend a complete cleaning and re-greasing after 5 years.

    Axially moving trapezoidal screw. Rotating trapezoidal screw with travelling nut. To determine the correct size of screw jack it is necessary to know the load and required lifting speed. A significant proportion of the applied power is used in overcoming the friction between the trapezoidal screw and nut. These losses are converted into heat, and therefore either the speed, load or duty factor must be limited in order to avoid overheating of the screw jack. For this reason ball screw jacks can be used – either at higher speeds or for higher duty factors. For screw jack arrangements in which several screw jacks, differential gears, couplings etc. are combined, regard must be paid to losses in the various elements and to alignment errors.

    Screw jacks with a single pitch trapezoid thread spindles have a limited self-locking capability which cannot always be relied upon, especially with impact loads or vibrations (brake recommended). Trapezoidal Screw Jacks utilize the same rugged design as Machine Screw Jacks. These true metric jacks include a lift shaft with a special trapezoidal thread form. This thread form has been created to stay within standards yet retains the centralizing feature of our acme threads. These jacks can be supplied with IEC motor mounts.

They can be specified with a choice of four standard screw end conditions, plain end, top plate end, threaded end, or Male clevis end.
